| Crisis Response Team and Plan
Development |
| |
| If
a crisis were to occur today, would your school, community or organization be ready?
Being prepared to effectively manage a crisis requires the development of a
detailed crisis response plan. To develop your team and plan, CTRI will guide your
group through a detailed development process. This plan usually requires one day to
develop, and will go through the following phases: |
| |
| Phase 1 - Who will be on the
crisis response team? |
| Prior to the development of the plan, it
is important to address who will be on the team, so that all team members are in
attendance. Consideration should be given to
having diverse representatives on the team. |
| |
| Phase 2 - Create a definition
of crisis. |
| What is the scope of the crisis you are
planning for? This will assist in determining
which situations require the team to mobilize. |
| Example: |
| For the purposes of this crisis response
plan, a crisis is an emotionally significant event that threatens the well-being of one or
more individuals or the school or community as a whole.
A crisis may include (but is not limited to) abduction, accidental death,
homicide, suicide, violent crime, attempted suicide, natural disaster, etc. |
| |
| Phase 3 - Determine the
goals/mission of the team. |
| Example: |
- Respond to the emotional impact of the crisis on victims, family
members and the greater school community
- Provide immediate support and safety
- Provide short and long-term therapeutic help
|
|
| Phase 4 - Review tasks of the
team. |
| a. Prior to a crisis |
- Develop handouts
- Liaise with other agencies and communities
- Receive training as needed
- Meet periodically to update information and to review plan
- Review different scenarios
|
| b. During and after a crisis |
- Collect factual information about the event
- Determine what the crisis response plan will be
- Communicate information to relevant people
- Contact resources, offer counseling and debriefing services,
etc.
- Conduct follow-up activities
|
|
| Phase 5 - Assign roles. |
- Who is the team leader?
- Who is the media contact?
- Who is the liaison with other school divisions and outside
agencies?
- Who will develop resources?
|
|
| Phase 6 - Establish how team
members will be informed if there is a crisis. |
- Will you use a phone tree?
- Will the team leader call everyone?
- How soon will you try to meet?
Will this vary with different crises?
|
|
| Phase 7 - Distribute
information to relevant parties. |
- How can the team be contacted?
- What information should people be able to provide?
|
|
| At
the conclusion of the crisis response team and plan development, CTRI will distribute a
report of the work done and decisions made during the meeting. |
|
| It is recommended that those who participate in the development
of the crisis response plan first take the training Crisis Response Planning. |
